Westbury alum named Texas Tech offensive player of the week
Offensive Tackle Mickey Okafor, a 2007 graduate of Westbury High School, was named Texas Tech's offensive player of the week by the coaching staff after the Red Raiders victory over the University of Colorado.
A 6-foot, 6-inch 305-pound junior, Okafor was a redshirt freshman in 2007 and saw action in three games in 2008 against Souther Methodist University and the University of Massachusetts at home and on the road against the University of Kansas. Okafor made his first two career starts against the University of North Dakota and the University of New Mexico. He played in a total of five games at both the guard and tackle position.
Okafor chose Texas Tech over the University of Houston, University of Nebraska and Oklahoma State University.
At Westerbury, Okafor was a first-team All-District 20-5A selection and was also named second-team All-Greater Houston by the Houston Chronicle after his senior year. The Houston Chronicle, on its annual Area Top 60 list, ranked him as the No. 5 overall offensive lineman in Houston. He started 30 games and also played basketball.
