Missouri City Girl Scout holds day camp for seniors to earn Gold Award

Claudia Singleton is the recipient of the Girls Scouts Gold Award for her holding a day camp for seniors in Missouri City.

Missouri City resident and Girl Scout Claudia Singleton recently held a day camp for seniors at a local assisted living facility in order to earn the Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award.

The Gold Award is the highest national honor a Girl Scout can achieve, earned by less than five percent of Girl Scouts, according to a press release. It requires outstanding leadership skills, career planning, community involvement and personal development. Girl Scouts must also complete more than 100 service hours and two to three years of intensive work, including the planning and execution of a community service project, in order to be eligible for the award.

For her service project, Singleton hosted a recreational and educational day camp for seniors. The facility residents took part in activities such as arts and crafts, games, complimentary manicures, massages and learning about recycling. The camp lasted three days and was attended by 12 seniors.

"I chose this project to give back to seniors who have done so much in the world and in my local community," Singleton said in the press release.

Singleton has been a member of the Girl Scouts for 12 years and is also a member of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute Girl Planning Board, part of the 52nd National Convention held in Houston last year. At her high school, Singleton was a member of the marching band, National Honor Society, Photography Club and the school's African Dance Troupe.

"I have seen Claudia really step forward to take on leadership roles in school, church, Girl Scouts and more," said Londa Singleton, Claudia's mother, in the press release.

"I learned to not take anything for granted and that even the smallest things in your mind can be the most important things for someone else," Singleton said in the press release.

Claudia graduated from Hightower High School in 2012 and plans to attend college to study journalism or education.
